Avondale is a neighborhood on the Northwest side of Chicago, bordered by Addison Street to the north, the north branch of the Chicago River to the east, Pulaski Road to the west and Diversey Avenue to the south. Avondale is rich in working class traditions and industrial character and originally a Polish community. The Polish Village or Jackowo and Waclawowo derives their Polish names from two Polish Roman Catholic parishes – St Hyacinth’s Basilica and St Wenceslaus Church.
Today, young professionals, artists, and new families are drawn into the area due to its location and multicultural heritage. Housing here mostly consists of brick 2-flats, 3-flats and bungalows built in the first half of the 20th century.
The famous Kurowski’s Sausage Shop is located on Milwaukee Ave and well known for its best meats and rye bread this side of Warsaw. Other local favorites are Endy’s Deli, Red Apple and Staropolska. A medley of restaurants speak to the diversity of this area including, Russian, Romanian, Ecuadorian, Japanese and a local Irish Pub favorite, Chief O’Neill’s. Classic American bbq at Pork Shoppe and Kuma’s Corner hails craft beers and burger combos.
Avondale is home to the new second location of the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance and Hairpin Arts Center. The Avondale Mural under the overpass at Addison & Avondale is one of the newest murals in Chicago, designed by illustrator and designer Rafael Lopez who grew up in Mexico.
