The Gold Coast Historic District is located on Chicago’s Near North side and bordered by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street and Clark Street. The Gold Coast neighborhood grew in the wake of the great Chicago Fire in 1882, after millionaire Palmer Potter moved to the area and built the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure. Other wealthy Chicagoans moved into the area and it became one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Chicago. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Visitors from around the world make the Gold Coast one of their destination stops.
The Gold Coast is a premier Chicago neighborhood and highly sought after primarily for its location. Nestled between Lincoln Park, Old Town, River North and Streeterville, everything is within walking distance from the famous Oak Street with its exclusive shopping boutiques and restaurants, to the Magnificent Mile, to Lincoln Park Zoo and Oak Street and North Ave beaches.
